Longman and Lukey cello, London 18th century

SKU: S553

This charming, mid-late eighteenth century English cello was made for the prominent London music dealers James Longman and Charles Lukey by one of the better luthiers working in London at the time. It can be accurately dated sometime between 1769, when Lukey joined Longman’s business, and 1776, when Lukey either left the company or died. This cello has recently been restored for a professional cellist, whose first instrument it has been for a number of years. The tone is resonant, versatile, warm and characterful across all registers.
