Jim Forrest violin, Auckland 2010

SKU: B831

This elegantly-shaped violin was made by local luthier Jim Forrest, who started making initially in response to his daughter’s keen interest in violin playing, but found he had a good eye and steady enough hands to produce something rather better than the average amateur work we often see. This example is typical in showing a surprising sophistication in both its workmanship and its tone production, blending Amatese elements with Forrest’s own style to create a harmonious whole. The back is of well-figured maple, the oil-based varnish is an attractive amber colour, and the tone is warm and clear.
